Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Gris

Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Gris 2016

Raymond Chan 26 September 2016

Full, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, a little lighter on the edge. This has a very fresh and tightly bound nose with good depth and intensity of white and yellow stonefruits entwined with subtle exotic floral elements, unfolding complexing nuances of flint and minerals.  Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly concentrated with penetrating and vibrant flavours of white and yellow stonefruits interwoven with exotic floral, honeysuckle and mineral elements. Fresh, lacy acidity lends a mouthwatering feel and the wine is guided by a very fine-grained, firm phenolic threaded line leading to a lingering finish of minerals and white stonefruits. This is an elegantly concentrated, vibrant dry Pinot Gris with flavours of white stonefruits and florals with complexing mineral nuances and a fine-textured line. Serve with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese fare over the next 3+ years. Fruit from the L6M and E6 blocks cool-fermented in stainless-steel with 10% in seasoned French oak barriques to 13.0% alc. and 3.9 g/L RS, the wine aged 2 months on lees.

Jancis Robinson's Website

Peter Yealands' extensive estate is in the Awatere Valley. Two different parcels, one near the coast. Long, cool tank fermentation. pH 3.23, TA 6.75 g/l, RS 3.5 g/l.
Intense aroma that is both ripe citrus and more tropical - mango and passion fruit. The touch of residual sugar is - thankfully - not intrusive and tastes more like fruit sweetness, balanced by clean-cut freshness. Rounded and generous and ripe. Overall on the rich and curvaceous side but the acidity holds it in shape. Packed with fruit. Maybe almost too much fruit and aroma to be versatile with food but very easy to drink on its own.- Julia Harding MW

With enough personality and power to stay the course, Yealands scored the tricky Green Thai Curry Food Match Trophy with this textured wine. 'With stone fruit and lemons, this is a richer, riper style,' said Annette Scarfe MW, suggesting seafood or drinking as an aperitif. 'Fresh, super-ripe fruit and high acidity with green apple and gooseberry notes, and a good clean finish,' said James Hocking of The Vineyard Group. Awarded - * Gold

Michael Coopers Buyer's Guide

The classy, powerful yet elegant 2014 vintage was estate-grown on an elevated (180 metres above sea level), north-facing slope in the Willowflat Vineyard and matured for a year in French oak barriques (15 per cent new). Deep ruby, it is fleshy, concentrated and supple, with very generous plum/spice flavours, complex and savoury. A rich, harmonious and very 'complete' wine, it should be at its best 2017+. * 5 Stars.
